Court Orders Onyeka Onwenu To Pay N5m And Publicly Apologise To COSON Chairman Tony Okoroji For Defamation

A Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja today Thursday, June 30, 2016 has
requested Onyeka Onwenu to pay the whole of five million naira as
harms for maligning of character to Chief Tony Okoroji, previous
President of PMAN and Chairman, Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON).
Conveying judgment in Suit No: ID/935/12 documented in 2012, Hon
Justice I. O. Akinkugbe (Mrs.) additionally requested Ms. Onwenu to
delicate an open expression of remorse to Chief Okoroji to be
distributed in Vanguard Newspapers and www.vanguardngr.com, the site
of Vanguard Newspapers.
The war amongst Okoroji and Onyeka goes back to 2011 when Okoroji went
to court taking after the distribution of an article in the Vanguard
daily paper release of October 14, 2011 which he considered a planned
endeavor to censure or criticize him.
As indicated by the COSON seat, the article asserting he occupied N3m
gave by the Cross Rivers State Government towards the last internment
of Christy Essien Igbokwe, is 'unjustified, outlandish, malignant,
fiendish, foolhardy and slanderous.'
The case was however tossed out by a Lagos State High Court. In those
days, Justice I.O. Kasali who ruled for the situation, submitted: 'For
words to be defamatory of a gathering, the said words probably brought
down that gathering in the estimation of right-thinking individuals
about general society and there must be proof of this from a man whose
perspectives of that individual have been so antagonistically
influenced'.

in Nigeria the vast majority don't regard a Judges decision!
